It seems that people are still struggling with time management in the engineering industry. We’re still burning people out and driving them to quit engineering for friendlier pastures. To be fair, ‘time management’ doesn’t even seem an accurate or appropriate term for what is essentially managementKatie Fletcher
While I agree with the sentiments that Katie shares with regards to time management, her opening paragraph stating that the industry is burning people out is the bigger problem.
While many of her tips make general sense, they often involve pushing tasks onto other people, and herein lies the problem, if I am short of time, and my colleagues are short of time, how will pushing my tasks to someone else help us out? It essentially helps me, and put more pressure on my colleagues, therein aggravating another person to potentially burn out quicker.
We really should be looking at why engineers are burning out, and short of time, and often overloaded. If we solve the real problem in the industry as a whole rather than just addressing individual person needs, maybe we will achieve both time management and reduced burn out.
