Major depression is a common and sometimes fatal disorder that is a leading cause of disability worldwide. The prevalence of depression in chronically ill patients can be as high as 40% or more. However, depression often goes unrecognised in physically ill patients and thus this value may not be an accurate representation of reality. Recent studies have shown a link between chronic immune responses and the development/presence of major depression.
Antibiotics is another area where current medical teaching is completely logic-free. In many ways it reminds me of the entire “Type 2 diabetic patients have too much insulin. So, let’s give them more insulin and see if it helps” argument which I outline in my book, The Diabetes Code. Logically it makes no sense. So, instead the medical establishment adopts a “I’m the expert so don’t bother trying to talk sense into me. Just do what I say” attitude.
It took 20 years for e-commerce to bring on the shopping mall apocalypse. The next transformation will happen much faster.
It may be useful to realize that there are two apparently contradictory ways to think about meditation and what it is all about, and the mix is different for different teachers and in different traditions. You may find me purposefully using the language of both these ways simultaneously, because both are equally true and important and the tension between them exceedingly creative and useful.
